Archery World Cup Stage 1: Atanu Das places fourth in the men's recurve qualifications

Olympian Atanu Das scored 673 points to place fourth in the men’s recurve rankings at the Archery World Cup Stage-1 in Antalya on Wednesday, making a strong comeback to international outdoor competition after almost one and a half years. Atanu earned 310 points using 10s and Xs after collecting 338 in the first half and 335 in the second half of his round. He was followed by B Dhiraj (665) positioned 15th, Tarundeep Rai (662) got 23rd, and Neeraj Chauhan (639) secured 90th place. With 2000 points, the Indian men’s team came in fourth.

How did the Indian women archers perform?

The top Indian woman was Bhajan Kaur, who garnered 648 points and finished in 32nd place. Aditi Jaiswal (637) occupied the 56th position, followed by Simranjeet Kaur (644), Ankita Bhakat (642), and Simranjeet Kaur (634). With 1934 points, the women’s team finished in eleventh place. Whereas with 1321 points, the mixed Indian team finished in 11th place in Archery World Cup. The number one-ranked Indian compound women’s team, comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami, and Avneet Kaur, lost to the eighth-ranked USA by 233-225 in the elimination round after receiving a bye. The compound men’s side from India, finished sixth and received a bye. They were eliminated in the second round after falling to Chinese Taipei by 236-234, who was ranked eleventh. Atanu Das is a senior member of the Indian archery squad. His partner, Deepika Kumari, is also an archer and the former World No.1 athlete in the world. At the age of 14, Mithu Da instructed Das in archery. Atanu Das relocated to the Tata Archery Academy in 2008, where he received instruction from the Korean coach Lim Chae Wong. In 2008, he made his international debut. In Colombia’s 2013 World Cup mixed team competition, Das and Deepika Kumari took home the bronze medal. To win India’s third gold medal at the World Cup, Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das defeated Sjef van den Berg and Gabriela Schloesser of the Netherlands.

Atanu Das was a member of Team India, which was eliminated by Team South Korea in the quarterfinals of the men’s team competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics. But in the Men’s competition, he prevailed over third-seeded Oh Jin-hyek in the Round of 16 and advanced to the Round of 8. Olympic gold medalist Oh Jin Hyek praised Atanu Das for this. Oh, Jin-hyek said, “While it might seem like an explanation. It is very different from what it seems to be in a gust of wind,” Jin-hyek said. “Atanu plays the game well. I wasn’t any superior to him.”
