Maharashtra defended their Khelo India Youth Games title after topping the medals tally with 57 gold medals, 48 silver and 53 bronze. Interestingly, this was their fourth Khelo India Youth Games title, having won the title in Pune (2019), Guwahati (2020), Bhopal (2022) and most recently Chennai (2023). On the other hand, in what was their best-ever show at the games, hosts Tamil Nadu finished behind table toppers Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu won a whopping 98 medals which also included 38 gold.
Khelo India Youth Games 2023 concluded its sixth edition of the flagship event under the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which concluded on January 31, 2024. Tamil Nadu hosted the KIYG 2024 across four cities: Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Coimbatore.
Talking about other dominant performances, Punjab are sixth in the medal tally with 37 medals and Kerala are seventh in the standings with 34 medals. Telangana (21 medals), Uttar Pradesh (40 medals) and Manipur (31 medals) are the next three teams in the table.
West Bengal (25 medals), Karnataka (39 medals), Andhra Pradesh (26 medals), Madhya Pradesh (29 medals), Odisha (19 medals), Gujarat (24 medals), Assam (22 medals), Chandigarh (17 medals), Uttarakhand (16 medals), and Jharkhand (nine medals) are placed between 11th and 20th in the medal tally. Bihar have five medals, Himachal Pradesh have 14 medals, and Jammu & Kashmir have seven medals in the tournament.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, lauded the athletes for their perseverance. “In the past ten days, not only Chennai but the entire nation witnessed history unfolding. The resilience, and determination exhibited by each athlete have filled us with an overwhelming sense of pride and optimism for the future of sports in our great nation. This edition of the Games holds a unique significance as it marks the first occasion the games have been hosted in the southern state,’’ said Thakur.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Government of Tamil Nadu for organizing such a remarkable, successful event and ensuring seamless coordination. PM in his speech at the opening ceremony envisioned that India will become the next sporting superpower in the world. And every passing day is a testament to this transformation.’’ added Thakur.
