Ajeesh Ali, Sanjay Selvamani, and Ramesh Budihal, three surfers from India, will compete at the ISA World Surfing Games 2023 in El Salvador from May 30 to June 7 to earn a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. For the first time, an Indian surfing team will compete in the ISA World Surfing Games, which have been held annually since 1964. After a three-stage selection procedure, the Indian team was chosen by the Surfing Federation of India (SFI). Eight spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available at the ISA World Surfing Games in 2023, four for men and four for women. In India, Olympics.Com will live stream the event.

The top male and female athletes from each of the four continents—Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania—will be equally split among the Olympic spots. Individual athletes will be given the spots. The men’s open division will host the three Indian surfers, who are all 22 years old. Ajeesh Ali has won the national championship three times, while Ramesh Budihal has won six times. Meanwhile, Sanjay Selvamani has finished second in the national surfing championships five times.

Other athletes to watch out for

Surfers from North and South America, however, will have to wait until the Chilean Pan American Games in 2023 to qualify for Paris 2024. But the World Surfing Games in Surf City, El Salvador, in 2023 will serve as a Pan American Games qualification event. The top five male and female surfers from the Americas at the World Surfing Games will advance to the 2023 Pan American Games, which will take place in Santiago, Chile later this year.

297 surfers from 64 nations will compete in the ISA World Surfing Games 2023 on the waves of La Bocana and El Sunzal, and the stakes are high. The lineup includes renowned surfers, such as two-time World Surfing League champion John John Florence and Olympic champion Carissa Moore of the United States. Olympic silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi of Japan and three-time world champion Sally Fitzgibbons of Australia will also compete for qualification to Paris 2024. Up to 28 of the 40 Olympians competing in Tokyo 2020 will compete in El Salvador.
