The International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games will be held in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and will provide a final opportunity for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics. The tournament will take place from February 22 to March 2, in 2024, with Margara serving as the primary wave and El Pico and Rastrial as the twin breaks. The top five male competitors and the top seven female competitors will receive qualification spots for Paris 2024, with the top national teams for men and women receiving an additional spot for their nation.

There will also be qualifying for the Pan American Games in Chile, the World Surfing League Championship Tour, and the World Surfing Games in El Salvador. At the most recent World Surfing Games, the men from Japan and the women from the United States both received extra berths for Paris 2024. The World Championships were previously held in Puerto Rico in 1968 and 1988.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre expressed his excitement about Puerto Rico hosting the final Olympic qualifier for surfing’s second appearance at the Olympics. He believes that the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games will be an exciting and dramatic conclusion to the qualification process. Organising Committee Chairman Richard Carrion said that the island is “honored” to host the event and promised to ensure a memorable experience for all.

Surfing at Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Surfing events at Paris 2024 will be held at Teahupo’o on the island of Tahiti, more than 15,000 kilometers from the French capital. The sport made its first appearance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as an additional sport and has been added to the core program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The ISA World Surfing Games is the last chance for surfers to obtain their spot for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Thus, it becomes a crucial event for those hoping to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

Surfing at the Summer Olympics

Surfing is a relatively new addition to the Summer Olympics, having made its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games. The decision to include surfing as an Olympic sport was made by the International Olympic Committee in 2016 and it was met with a mixed response from the surfing community. Some were thrilled to see their sport on the world’s biggest stage, while others were concerned that the competitive nature of the sport could detract from its soulful and free-spirited roots.

The surfing events at Tokyo 2020 were held at Tsurigasaki Beach, which is located about 60 miles southeast of Tokyo. The competition was open to 40 surfers from around the world – 20 men and 20 women – who qualified through a combination of their performances on the World Surf League (WSL) tour and the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games.

In the men’s event, Brazil’s Italo Ferreira took home the gold medal, while Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi won silver and Australia’s Owen Wright won bronze. In the women’s event, Carissa Moore of the United States won gold, South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag won silver, and Japan’s Amuro Tsuzuki won bronze.
