Japan’s men’s national team and the United States’ women’s national team clinched the first two berths in surfing for the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris. Kanaoa Igarashi, a Tokyo 2020 silver medalist, won the men’s individual title at the 2022 ISA World Surfing Games for Japan, and Kirra Pinkerton of Team USA won the women’s individual title. With this, both the surfers contributed to their respective countries in earning the maximum team points in their respective competitions. Igarashi earned the Paris Olympics berth along with his Japanese teammates Kamiyama Keanu and Murakami Shun, who is also an Olympian. In Huntington Beach, California, Pinkerton headed the US women’s charge with the support of Zoe McDougall and Gabriela Bryan.
The men’s team of the United States started off quite well to seize the men’s spot, but their two surfers Kolohe Andino and Nat Young couldn’t make it to the final which took place on Saturday. However, their women’s team was consistent throughout with Zoe McDougall and Gabriela Bryan advancing into the rounds. It was Kirra Pinkerton who claimed the individual title in the women’s category for the US.
