The Central American and Caribbean Games 2023, also known as the 24th edition of the event, got underway in San Salvador, El Salvador, on June 23, 2023. Commonly known as San Salvador 2023, this quadrennial multi-sport event will run until July 8, 2023. The decision to move the games from Panama City, Panama, was made due to the COVID-19 pandemic and infrastructure reasons.

Originally planned to be hosted in Panama City, the government of Panama announced its withdrawal as the host due to the challenges posed by the pandemic. As a result, Centro Caribe Sports began searching for alternative locations. In May 2021, San Salvador, El Salvador emerged as the main host city, taking over from Panama City. This decision was made considering the city’s infrastructure capabilities and scheduling feasibility.

While San Salvador will be the primary host city, some sports events have been relocated to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The move was important in order to ensure proper facilities and an organized schedule for the participating athletes. Santo Domingo is serving as the venue for seven sports during the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. These include taekwondo, modern pentathlon, equestrian, canoeing, shooting, racquetball, and field hockey.

Maqui and Volco have been chosen as the official mascots for the Central American and Caribbean Games 2023. Maqui is inspired by the Maquilíshuat tree, which is also the emblem of the games. It is depicted with the ability to run. While, Volco draws inspiration from the Quezaltepeque Volcano and the games’ official emblem, and it is represented with the ability to climb.
