The inaugural edition of the Global Chess League (GCL), a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), announced on Monday that six franchises will feature in the league. The tournament is slated to take place from June 21 to July 2 at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. With its goal of transforming the chess landscape, the GCL is expected to feature some notable chess figures like Viswanathan Anand, Ding Liren, Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Hou Yifan, Kateryna Lagno, among others.

The Global Chess League (GCL) is set to launch its first two seasons with six committed franchises. This annual GCL tournament will feature an innovative mixed-team format. Under this arrangement, each franchise will play 10 matches following a double round-robin structure. The best-of-six board scoring system will be utilized to determine the victor of each match, all boards played simultaneously. The two standout teams from these match-ups will advance to the grand finale. Slated for, The final match, which will take place on July 2, 2023, will reward the ultimate winner with the prestigious title of World Champion Franchise Team.

What are the six franchises taking part in the first edition of the Global Chess League?

upGrad Mumba Masters, Ganges Grandmasters, Balan Alaskan Knights, Triveni Continental Kings, Chingari Gulf Titans, and Chingari Gulf Titans are the six franchises of the Global Chess League.

1) upGrad Mumba Masters

UpGrad Mumba Masters, a team under the stewardship of U SPORTS, founded by Ronnie Screwvala, will be making their first appearance on the international stage in the GCL. U SPORTS, recognized for its significant achievements in various sports disciplines such as Kabaddi, Table Tennis, and eSports in India, is now stepping onto the global platform for the first time ever.

2) Ganges Grandmasters

Ganges Grandmasters, the second franchise of the tournament, will be under the leadership of Insurekot Sports (ISPL), a company owned by Suresh Kotak. It is important to note that ISPL holds ownership over Puneri Paltan, a team that competes in both the Pro Kabaddi League and the Ultimate Table Tennis League.

3) Balan Alaskan Knights

Balan Alaskan Knights will be the third team joining this prestigious list of team owners, under the patronage of the Punit Balan Group (PBG). The group is led by the multi-faceted businessman, entrepreneur, and sportspreneur, Mr. Punit Balan who has made substantial investments in numerous Indian sports leagues over the previous two years. Their goal is to support India to become a global leader in the sports domain.

4) Triveni Continental Kings

Triveni Continental Kings is making its inaugural appearance in the GCL, representing Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited, one of the top-tier integrated sugar producers in India. The company has a solid presence in the engineering sector, excelling in fields such as Power Transmission and Water & Wastewater treatment solutions. Another strong pillar supporting the team is Triveni Turbine Limited (TTL), a leading firm known for its expertise in industrial heat & power solutions and decentralized steam-based renewable turbines up to 100 MW in size.

5) Chingari Gulf Titans

Chingari Gulf Titans, representing the Chingari App from the Tech4Billion Group, are preparing for their first venture into the sports industry through the GCL. Chingari App gained considerable recognition as one of the world’s most rapidly expanding Web3 Social Networking Apps, with its user base exploding particularly in the wake of the pandemic. 

6) SG Alpine Warriors

SG Alpine Warriors, under the ownership of APL Apollo-led SG Sports, are set to participate in the GCL. SG Sports, backed by APL Apollo, stands as one of the most reliable and largest building material corporations in India.
