Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards will welcome the Atlanta Hawks to Capital One Arena for an NBA game on Wednesday. The Washington Wizards won 117-119 in their last game over the Pistons. Daniel Gafford converted a putback of Bradley Beal’s airball at the buzzer, and the Washington Wizards handed the Detroit Pistons their ninth straight loss, 119-117 on Tuesday night.

With the score tied, Beal drove to the baseline and shot a fadeaway floater over James Wiseman that was too strong and missed everything. Gafford grabbed the weak-side rebound and banked in the game-winner. “Brad went at exactly the right time — if he missed, we’d get a chance at an offensive rebound, but there wouldn’t be time for the Pistons to get anything,” Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said.

“(Gafford) did a great job getting behind the defense to get the rebound. Maybe we got a little lucky, but we made a play.” Beal finished with 32 points and Kristaps Porzingis scored 24 before fouling out in the final minute. Washington (32-34) ended a two-game skid and is 10th in the Eastern Conference, in position for the final spot in the play-in tournament.

Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks on the other hand lost 130-128 against the Heat in their last game. Trae Young scored 25 for Atlanta, which got 23 from Dejounte Murray and 17 apiece from Saddiq Bey and John Collins. “We’ve been really moving the ball, scoring,” Young said. “We’ve just got to make a little more effort on the defensive end.”

The Heat led for 1:07 in the very early going, but Atlanta had control by the end of the opening quarter. The Hawks shot 76% (19 for 25) in the first 12 minutes, led by as many as 15 and took a 43-30 edge into the second. It was the most points allowed by Miami in any quarter this season. Coming off an off day Sunday, Atlanta was flying at the start.

“I want us to be the best team we can be by the end of the year,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said. “And that’s really what it comes down to, how can we keep improving? Obviously, we want to win — record, standings, playoffs — but I think we’ll be better off if we continue to improve. And in order to do that, sometimes you need to have an off day.”
