Romain Grosjean is set to have a new seat fitting that will allow him to have his much-talked-about final Formula 1 test outing. The French driver was met with a terrible accident in the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix which brought his decade-long racing career to an abrupt halt. His hand injuries prevented him from ever entering the track before the end of the 2020 season or even his contract.

The driver had made it clear that he did not want his F1 career to be over in such a manner and also made public statements that one of his former teams would allow him a run in one of their cars so that he could retire from the sport on his terms.

On an episode in the  ‘In the Fast Lane’ podcast for the Australian Grand Prix, Netflix’s Drive to Survive producer James Gay-Rees revealed that Frenchman has had a seat fitting with one of the teams: “We were filming with Grosjean for a seat fitting today. He’s having one last spin with a team.”

POSSIBLE TEAMS

Although he did not reveal which team would do Grosjean the favour, it is likely to be Mercedes. Toto Wolff, the company CEO, had made a public offer to Grosjean to drive an older Mercedes at a test session if no other team stepped up.

Other teams that would allow Grosjean to drive would include team Haas, but it is unlikely due to their relatively smaller resources. Grosjean still works for them through his e-sports team. He had also worked previously for Lotus/Renault, now known as Alpine.

Signing up with Dale Coyne Racing in the US, Grosjean will participate in a part-time IndyCar season in 2021. He is, however, staying away from oval racing for the time being.
