A new standings leader and an overtaking masterclass occurred during the second and third rounds of the season after two fierce night races in Diriyah. The Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix Round 4 marks the series’ 30th race venue and the next installment of the GEN3 era as Formula E travels to the second-most populous nation and its fourth-largest city. The fourth race of the season, which will take place on what is billed as India’s first street circuit near the NTR Gardens and along the Hussain Sagar lake’s shoreline, will be the nation’s first major FIA World Championship race in ten years.

Home team Mahindra Racing, which fields Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Rowland, the 2016–17 Formula E champions, will have the fervent crowd cheering them on. The former already has trophies to his name this year, having won them at the Mahindra season-opener in Mexico City, and no driver has placed higher than him nine times in Asia. This weekend, he will stop at nothing.

According to the form book, Mahindra Racing will have to defeat TAG Heuer Porsche and Avalanche Andretti, two Porsche-powered teams, if they want to finish first in Hyderabad. The 99X Electric Gen3 from the Stuttgart manufacturer has finished first and second in every race so far in Season 9.

With the first victory of the new GEN3 era in Mexico City, Jake Dennis of Andretti set the standard, and Pascal Wehrlein finished second. The two sparred in Diriyah and Rounds 2 and 3 of the previous campaign, but the German prevailed over Dennis in both races to claim the victory, a convincing win-double in Saudi Arabia, and the championship lead. Meanwhile, Porsche continues to trail Andretti, a customer, by just two points in the Teams’ table.

Before Round 3, Wehrlein made things easier on himself by qualifying fifth rather than ninth as he did the day before. He always presented a threat to those in front from there. In both Diriyah E-Prix, the Porsche driver was able to control his energy and battle to the front, where he remained. As far as the rest of the pack is concerned, his and Dennis’ performances thus far both appear concerning.

However, Jake Hughes’s NEOM McLaren secured the first-ever Pole Position last time out. The rookie has the best qualifying record of anyone on the grid and has scored in each round this season. He came close to winning the race, but veteran teammate Rene Rast needed just one invitation to secure the group’s first-ever podium finish in Formula E in Round 3. Sam Bird, a veteran of more than 100 Formula E races, made a comeback to finish on the podium for Jaguar TCS Racing in Diriyah, making them another team to keep an eye on. The British driver also holds the record for most victories in Asia with four, one more than Bird.
