Stoffel Vandoorne, the 2023 Formula E World Champion, has been signed by the Aston Martin Formula 1 team as a test and backup driver. Vandoorne, a former McLaren driver who now drives as a reserve for Mercedes in Formula One alongside Nyck de Vries, won the FE championship in 2021–2022. Along with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, he will cobble together his championship defense with the DS Penske team at Aston Martin.

Alongside current F2 champion Felipe Drugovich, 30-year-old Vandoorne will assume duties for the 24-race 2023 season. Vandoorne, the 2015 GP2 champion, competed 41 times for McLaren in Formula One between 2016 and 2018. He made his F1 debut in Bahrain in 2016 while filling in for the injured Alonso, and his best performance came in seventh place in Singapore and Malaysia in 2017.

‘It is incredibly exciting’

“It is incredibly exciting to be stepping into a reserve driver role in Formula 1 – and I’m delighted to be doing it with Aston Martin. I’ve watched with great interest how the team has developed and expanded operationally, and I know how incredibly determined it is to make progress in every area. Said Vandoorne in a statement.
