The World Rally Championship (abbreviated as WRC) is the highest level of global competition in the motorsport discipline of rallying, owned and governed by the FIA. There are separate championships for drivers, co-drivers, manufacturers and teams. The series currently consists of 12 three to four-day rally events driven on surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. Each rally is usually split into 15–25 special stages which are run against the clock on up to 350 kilometers of closed roads.
A return to Athens’ Olympic Stadium for Thursday’s opening test. The Acropolis is renowned for sparkling super special stages and last year’s curtain-raiser in front of the capital’s Parliament was no exception. OAKA, built for the 2004 Olympics, hosted the Acropolis in 2005 and 2006. Located at the National Trade Fair in Lamia in central Greece, 220km north of Athens. A legendary WRC fixture which returned to the championship last year for the first time since 2013. Twisty gravel mountain roads combine with high temperatures and choking dust to provide a fierce challenge. The tracks are smoother than they used to be but still pose punishing demands on tyres and cars.
