Carlo Ancelotti became the first manager in history to win the top five European league titles when Real Madrid defeated Espanyol 4-0 on Saturday to  clinch the 2021-22 La Liga trophy. The Italian tactician has now won league titles in Italy, England, Germany, France and Spain. Nobody has ever achieved this full-house of the so-called big five European leagues before. The Espanyol win was the Los Blancos’ 25th league victory of their astonishing season, while they have also recorded six draws and three defeats. Rodrygo netted a first half double at Santiago Bernabeu before Marco Asensio extended the lead early in the second period and Karim Benzema’s late tap-in from Vinicius’ assist completed the drubbing to secure the win and Madrid’s 35th Spanish league title.

Real Madrid’s stunning season

The Italian tactician has done a fantastic job with the Los Blancos to win the league with four games to spare. The result against Espanyol has helped Madrid to take an unassailable 17-point lead over second-placed Sevilla. The Los Blancos boast the best attacking record in Spanish top flight football with 71 goals and the second-best defensive record behind Sevilla with only 29 goals conceded to date. Meanwhile striker Benzema is undoubtedly their star performer, having found the back of the net 26 times to lead the race for the La Liga golden boot award. The Frenchman is in the form of his life, having scored 42 goals in as many appearances across all competitions this campaign.

Ancelotti’s second stint in Madrid

Ancelotti has now won two trophies since returning to Bernabeu last summer, with success in La Liga following up their Supercopa de Espana final victory over Athletic Club in January. Though Madrid exited the Copa del Rey against the same opponent, they are very much on course to end the season with three trophies, as they remain in the hunt for Champions League glory. Los Blancos will welcome Manchester City for the second leg of the Champions League next week, aiming to overturn a one goal deficit after losing the first leg 4-3 at Etihad stadium. In his first season at Madrid in 2013-15 Ancelotti had won the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Champions League, European Super cup and the FIFA Club World cup.

Ancelotti’s stunning CV

The 62-year-old coach started his extraordinary journey of European league titles with AC Milan in 2003-04, when he led the Rossoneri to a Serie A triumph. Chelsea was next with the Premier League trophy in 2009-10. France followed as he led Paris Saint-Germain to victory in Ligue 1 in 2012-13. And then, he coached Bayern Munich to Bundesliga triumph in 2016-17. On top of that, Ancelotti has also won the Champions League three times, the club world cup twice, the FA Cup, Coppa Italia, Italian super Cup, three editions of the European Super cup and two German Super Cups.
