According to a report from barcablaugranes.com, Dani Alves will extend his contract with Barcelona for one more year. The Brazilian right-back rejoined the Catalan club last November for a free transfer. His contract was till the end of the current season with an option to extend for another season. Alves, who will turn 39 in May is proving to be a pivotal player in Xavi’s plans because of his experience. The veteran doesn’t have the legs to cover the ground like a modern full-back but his game awareness and ability to deliver quality passes, pin-point crosses is being used effectively by Xavi.

He is more often deployed behind a winger who can do the bulk of the running and provide cover to the veteran and on one occasion he was also used right next to Sergio Busquets. Xavis’ is using the Versatile full-back to good effect.

Moreover, Alves is also seen as a good leader on and off the pitch. The way he looks after his fitness, his eating habits and preparations for the game are there to be learned for the youngsters. He leads by example and can act as a mentor for youngsters in the club, especially the American right-back Sergino Dest, who is expected to take the baton forward.

Although Alves joined in November he had to wait till January to make his second debut for the club. However since making his second debut against Granada, he has been impressive, making six appearances, scoring ones and providing three assists.

For Alves, extending the contract could be beneficial as he is trying to play for his nation in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Performing well for a top club like Barcelona will increase his chances of boarding the flight to Qatar. He is aiming to add that one trophy that is missing from his honours list.

Barcelona are currently placed fourth in the La Liga standings with 45 points from 25 games. The Blaugrana are finding form at the right time under new boss Xavi, having won their last three games in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and conceding just three.
