Captain Faf du Plessis (88) and former skipper Virat Kohli (41 not out) led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a mammoth total of 205/2 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2022 contest at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Sunday. Asked to bat, du Plessis and Anuj Rawat (21), forged an opening stand of 50 runs before the latter was sent packing.

Faf du Plessis-Virat Kohli make merry of PBKS bowlers

However, unperturbed by the dismissal, the former South Africa captain continued to pile on misery on the PBKS bowlers as he brought up his half-century in 38 deliveries and was well complimented by Kohli from the other end.

Du Plessis, who was the aggressor of the 118-run second wicket stand with Kohli, notched up three boundaries and seven hits over the fence in his masterful innings of 57 deliveries.

Kohli, meanwhile, played the role of a perfect second fiddle as he took a backseat and allowed the South African to take charge of the innings. The former India and RCB captain hit one boundary and two sixes in his 29-ball unbeaten knock.

Later, veteran wicket keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik (32 not out), played a quick fire knock off 14 deliveries to guide RCB past 200 runs in the IPL 2022. RCB, thus, became the first franchise in IPL 2022 to score over 200 runs.

PBKS bowlers toil under pressure

Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal will be looking to reinforce his bowling line-up as the six bowlers that he utilised leaked runs in abundance and failed to find breakthroughs.

England’s Liam Livingstone bowled one over to give away 14 runs while West Indies’ Odean Smith bowled at an economy of 13 in his stipulated four overs.

Arshdeep Singh and Rahul Chahar, meanwhile, picked up a wicket each.
