A season or two prior to the NHL Draft, the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge has a history of showcasing future NHL players. Throughout the years, the greatest and brightest NHL players have taken part in this event, and it has provided us a sneak peek at some of the future stars we’ll be witnessing rise to the top of drafts.

The U17 Challenge, however, has not taken place for the past two years because of pandemic limitations. Hockey Canada is the host of the contest, which has evolved over time into a tighter, more intense battle.

It almost has the sense of a huge variation on the World Junior Championships in a few years. Red, Black, and White are the three teams that Canada sends to this competition. The Canadians once had more teams, separated up by geography, but have subsequently streamlined into the three teams we currently see, producing a more fair playing field.

Along with the Canadian trio, USA Hockey also sends its U.S. National Under-17 Team from the National Team Development Program. Teams from Finland, Sweden, and Czechia, all U17 teams, will compete this year.

For an even eight teams, Russia would normally be included in the competition, but because of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian teams are temporarily barred from participating in any international sporting events.

However, with seven teams competing in this year’s competition, there are a number of potential to pay close attention to. Here are some of the players to be aware of as we approach the competition, which takes place in Langley and Delta, British Columbia, from November 3–12.
