Bakersfield Condors will take on the Henderson Silver Knights in the AHL USA on November 22 at Mechanics Bank Arena. The Bakersfield Condors defeated the Ontario Reign 3-1 Saturday night despite playing a close game. While Quinton Byfield, who missed a few weeks due to illness, participated in his second game after being loaned to the Ontario Reign for a conditioning assignment. Through 20 minutes of play, Byfield’s second line, which included Alan Quine and Samuel Fagemo at the center, was perhaps the best line for the Reign. Byfield scored the only goal for Ontario on the evening while standing alone in front of the goal and patiently lifting the ball by Olivier Rodrigue’s left pad. The Condors’ brand of hockey is straightforward. Although it may not be attractive, it works. This season, they have defeated the Reign twice because of such a style of play. The Condors once more played a tight-checking game and didn’t allow many dangerous 5-on-5 opportunities. The Condors didn’t allow the Reign any room as they trailed by two with two minutes left and an additional attacker.
When the Reign were forced to dump the puck into the zone, the Condors were the first to receive it and clear it because they did a superb job of blocking shooting and passing lanes. In those last two minutes, they did an excellent job preserving their two-goal advantage. Ontario’s power play has been ineffective during their three-game losing run, going 1-for-13 (7.7%). The Reign have attempted a 5-on-3 and two significant five-minute power plays over that time period without success. You might remember that the Ontario Reign had the greatest power play in AHL history last year. Through 11 games this season, the power play is tied for 19th (20%). They are having excellent chances, but they are unable to use the man advantage to put the puck in the back of the net.
