However, India skipper Mithali Raj won the toss and she chose to bowl first at Seddon Park in Hamilton. New Zealand got into trouble with an early blow as Pooja Vastrakar affected a stunning run-out to sent Suzie Bates back to the hut when she was batting at just 5 runs.

It took place during the third over of the game when the veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami bowled Sophie Devine, who played it to the off-side and called Suzie Bates for a single. However, Pooja Vastrakar quickly picked up the ball and threw it directly at the keeper’s end. Bates, who was running towards the dangerous end, failed to reach on time and India eventually got their first breakthrough in the form of Bates who got out for 5 off 10.
