Since making her debut in 2017, Haryana native Udita Duhan has adeptly filled the role of defender for the Indian women’s hockey team. She was a member of the squad that placed second in the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy at Donghae and was instrumental in the team that won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Udita was born in the Haryana region of Hisar, in the village of Nangal, Bhiwani. Jasbir Singh, her father, played handball and worked as a police officer. She began by playing handball before switching to hockey. Her mother Geetha Devi pushed her to play hockey after her father passed away in 2015, and she quickly checked into the SAI hostel.
In addition to competing in the Hockey Women’s World Cup in London in 2018, Udita was a member of the squad that won silver at the Asian Games in Palembang, Jakarta, as well as the Asian Champions Trophy in 2018. Udita Duhan also participated in India’s historic fourth-place showing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She went on to earn bronze in the Women’s Asia Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2022. In the FIH Women’s Hockey Pro League 2021/22, Udita was the representative of India and just earned her 50th international cap.
Duhan has occasionally scored goals for India, but none have been as significant as the one she scored to pull India back into the game against Ireland in the Nations Cup semi-final. India qualified for the 2023–24 FIH Pro League by winning the ensuing shoot-out and defeating Spain in the championship game.
