Hailing from Kolasib, a town near Aizawl in Mizoram, Lalremsiami Hmarzote has made a name for herself in the Indian women’s field hockey team, playing both as a dynamic forward and sometimes as a halfback. At the local level, she competes for the Sports Authority of India club. She was a part of the team at the World Cup 2018 and clinched a historic silver medal at the Asian Games 2018, which was a first for any athlete from Mizoram.
Born to a family involved in agriculture, with a father who once served in the military before turning to farming, and a mother who is a housewife, Lalremsiami’s journey began at the age of 11 when she was inducted into a hockey academy in Thenzawl, funded by the state government. After moving to New Delhi l in 2016, she faced difficulty in learning Hindi, which she overcame with support from her peers. She then played for India’s U18 team at the Asia Cup and later joined the senior team’s camp in 2017.
Lalremsiami then competed in the Asian Youth Olympic Games qualifier where India earned second place. During the Summer Youth Olympics, Lalremsiami played a crucial role in India’s silver-medal triumph, as she scored nine goals. Her performance at the FIH Series Finals 2018–19 helped in getting the prestigious FIH Rising Star of the Year award.
Preparing for the Olympics, she toured with the Indian team to Argentina and Germany in 2021 and became the first woman from Mizoram to join the Olympic squad. The Indian team achieved a sensational fourth-place finish at the Olympics and rose to their highest-ever world ranking (8th). The Mizoram government recognized her contributions and awarded the chief coach, a group A post, under the Mizoram Sports and Youth Services department, a Rs. 25 lakh cash prize, and a plot of land.
