Hailing from Jharkhand’s Simdega district, Salima Tete is one of the prominent defenders and members of the Indian women’s hockey team. Born on December 27, 2001, into a farming family, she quickly adopted the sport, guided by her father, who was a hockey player himself. She gained prominence when she led the Indian junior team to a silver win at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics in 2018.
Salima Tete’s debut in international hockey came in 2017, playing against Belarus in her first match with the Indian national team. As the captain of the Youth Olympic squad in 2018, she was instrumental in India’s historic silver finish. Her defensive skills were critical during the FIH Olympic Qualifiers against the United States.
Marking her Olympic debut, Salima Tete joined an elite list of athletes from her home state of Jharkhand to compete on this prestigious stage, following Nikki Pradhan. She played an instrumental role for the Indian team at the Women’s Asia Cup 2022, where the team secured a bronze medal. Moreover, she was a part of India’s bronze-winning campaign at both the FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League and the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
The year 2023 witnessed Salima’s strategic defense and scoring ability at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she helped India clinch the bronze medal. Her performance continued at the Hockey Women’s Champions Trophy in her home state, where India prevailed over Japan in a decisive 4-0 victory. In the tournament, Salima was India’s second-highest goal scorer with 5 goals, just behind Sangita Kumari (6 goals).
