Jugraj Singh, an Indian field hockey player, was born on April 22, 1983. A car accident in 2003 ended his playing career. The former Punjab policeman was a self-taught drag-flicker defender who was later hired as a coach. He was born in 1983 into a Sikh household in Punjab. Singh, a left fullback for the Punjab Police team in Jalandhar, attended the Surjeet Singh Hockey Academy in Jalandhar and the Air India Hockey Academy in Delhi. He made his debut for his country at the 2001 under-18 Asia Cup in Ipoh. Singh was not the only member of his family to play field hockey: his brother-in-law Gurmail Singh was a member of the 1980 Olympic team, and his older sister Rajbeer Kaur Rai is a former India captain and Arjuna Award winner.

By winning the Asian Championship, the 2003 Indo-Pak Champions Trophy, and the Junior World Cup, Singh significantly contributed to the advancement of Indian field hockey. Many pundits regarded him as the next Sohail Abbas; after seeing Singh play so brilliantly in a series against Pakistan, Abbas claimed to have seen a younger version of himself in Singh. Singh is the Indian men’s national team’s penalty-corner coach. Under Chief Coach Michael Nobbs’ guidance, India qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Thanks to Sandeep Singh and V. R. Raghunath, India’s penalty-corner conversion percentage was exceptionally high during the qualifiers.
