Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, will not be competing in the upcoming Players Championship. As a result, his next event is likely to be the Masters at Augusta National in April in 2023. The announcement was made by the PGA Tour. It revealed that Woods, a two-time winner of the Players Championship, was not on the list of participants. Woods is still recovering from severe injuries to his lower right leg that he sustained in a car accident in February 2021. Woods’ last tournament was the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in February, where he finished tied for 45th place. In a post-match interview, he admitted that it was more difficult than he let on. Woods had not revealed his future schedule at the time, but he expressed his desire to compete in all four majors and a few other events. However, he stated that his body could only handle so much due to his back and leg surgeries.

The Riviera tournament marked Woods’ first tour-level event since he missed the cut at the Open Championship in July. He skipped the US Open to prepare for St. Andrews, where he made a remarkable return to competition and finished tied for 47th place. However, he withdrew from the PGA Championship after the third round. Woods is not participating in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill this week. He has won eight of his 82 PGA Tour titles in this venue. While it was not unexpected that he would not participate, some wondered if he would compete in the Players Championship. The championship is popular for its challenging conditions but is one of the easier, flatter courses on the tour.

The winner from last year’s competition Cameron Smith won’t be defending the championship. This is owing to his move to switch to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf tournament. However, the winners from the 2021 and 2019 editions, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy will be aiming to recapture the championship. The other favorites for the tournament are Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, and Collin Morikawa, who are also likely to give a tough competition.
