American golfer Lilia Vu claimed victory at the AIG Women’s Open 2023 on August 13, 2023, to achieve her second major title of the year with a six-stroke win. With a remarkable final-round score of 5-under 67, the 25-year-old star from California registered victory at the Walton Heath Golf Club. Vu’s previous triumph at the Chevron Championship 2023 in April set the stage for her exceptional year.

Lilia Vu‘s accomplishment on Sunday resulted in her becoming the first American woman since Juli Inkster in 1999, and the first female golfer overall since Jin Young Ko in 2019, to win two majors in a single year. The feat adds to the recent success of American women in golf, with three out of the five women’s majors this year being claimed by Americans, a record not seen since 2014.

As Lilia Vu started the final round, she was in a tight race, tied for the lead with Charley Hull, with no fewer than 11 players within striking distance. The tension in the game escalated, but Vu maintained her composure. By the 10th hole, she had established a commanding five-shot lead and remained free of trouble. Hull, who managed to hole out from a greenside bunker for an eagle at the par-5 11th hole, briefly threatened Vu’s lead. However, Vu’s focus allowed her to respond with a tap-in birdie at No. 12. With a five-shot lead, Vu’s smile was already emerging before her long birdie putt gracefully found the cup. Vu’s final score was 14-under 274.

Hull, who had the support of local fans near her hometown, ended with a 73 and once again found herself the runner-up in a major tournament. Her efforts were hampered by bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17, with the latter following a bizarre incident involving a protester on the green. Owing to her exceptional season, Vu will hold the world’s No. 1 position for the first time on Monday.

The tournament also saw performances from elite golfer Nelly Korda, who finished 12 strokes behind, and the highly-rated Swede, Linn Grant. Former two-time winner Jiyai Shin secured third place, one stroke behind Hull. Leona Maguire, the Irish golfer who became the first Irish woman to win on the LPGA Tour, finished tied 30. Former world no. 1 Atthaya Thitikul ended her campaign, tying for 36th.
