The Hero World Challenge 2023, slated for November 30 to December 3, 2023, is an unofficial event on the PGA Tour hosted by the renowned Tiger Woods. The event will witness Woods making a comeback to the circuit after a long break owing to injury. Viktor Hovland of Norway heads into the competition as the reigning champion, having claimed victory in the last two editions.

Viktor’s recent victories at the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship have positioned him as the frontrunner in this elite 20-player tournament. However, he is expected to face stiff competition from Scottie Scheffler, who will aim to finally clinch the title having earned the runner-up in the last two tournaments. Besides them, some of the prominent competitors include Wyndham Clark, the US Open winner, and Brian Harman, the British Open champion.

The Hero World Challenge 2023 offers a significant prize pool of $4.5 million, with a handsome $1 million to be awarded to the champion. The event, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, brings together a select group of the world’s leading golfers, currently 20. While this PGA Tour event does not contribute to FedEx Cup points or official prize money, participants do earn points for the Official World Golf Ranking.

Historically, the tournament began with a 16-player field, including the defending champion, the top 11 players from the Official World Golf Ranking, and four special invitees selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation. In 2008, the Hero World Challenge expanded to 18, featuring the latest winners of the four major PGA tournaments, the top 11 from the world rankings, the defending champion, and two special exemptions from the foundation.

The field further allowed 20 participants in 2021 as they gave an automatic invite to The Players Championship winner while maintaining the existing criteria for selection. The 2021 edition of the Hero World Challenge witnessed automatic invites to the major winners of both 2020 and 2021, compensating for the absence of the 2020 event, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
