Viktor Hovland of Norway won the Hero World Challenge, which came to an end on Sunday, December 4, 2022. The 25-year-old Viktor successfully defended his Hero World Assault at Albany Club in Nassau, fending off a valiant challenge from world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler. Viktor Hovland, who had a five-point lead going into the final nine holes, overcame a double bogey on the last hole to win by two strokes with a final-round total of 3 under 69. Since Tiger Woods in 2006 and 2007, he became the first player to successfully defend his championship after shooting an overall score of 16 under 272. Similar to the previous year, Hovland took home the victory, and Scheffler came in second.
With a three-stroke lead going into the final round, Viktor Hovland was tested by Scheffler, who shot an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole to reduce the lead to just one stroke. Hovland took a five-point advantage in the second half after Scheffler double-bogeyed the ninth hole. When they approached the last hole, Scheffler continued to apply pressure by making a run of three straight birdies on the 14th, 15th, and 16th holes to reduce the gap by two strokes. On the last 18th hole, both players made a bogey. To reclaim the top rank from Rory McIlroy, Scheffler needed to victory on Sunday. He missed the opportunity to play a birdie, which would have kept the possibility of a playoff and a top finish alive.
