Danjuma’s seventh minute strike was enough to secure a crucial win for the Spanish side and give them a slender advantage for the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Thursday.
Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma hailed head coach Unai Emery after their 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg tie at El Madrigal on Wednesday. Danjuma said, “Champions League nights are incomparable. We can still be so much better than we’ve shown today. Then again, if you win 1-0 against Bayern and can still improve, that’s a positive. Unai is a tactical mastermind. We’re confident in him and he’s confident in us – it goes hand in hand.”
Emery’s side displayed a defensive masterclass to get the better of the German giants. The Spanish side suffocated the six time European Cup winners when they tried to attack, while proving a constant menace to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on the counter-attack. A bit more composure in the attacking third would have given the Yellow Submarine a bigger victory but it wasn’t to be..
Bayern had the majority of the ball possession and created more than 20 chances but the hosts stood firm to thwart away the dangers. Emery’s side defended deep and gave away very little space for the opposition to work with.
Man of the match Giovani Lo Celso said: “We had it completely clear that we had to attack and defend as a unit. I want to thank the coaching staff for having faith in me to start this match.
“Now the tie is still open and while it will not be easy next week I think that if we are totally concentrated in the second match we’ll have our possibilities to go through.”
The Spanish side produced a similar performance to get the better of Juventus in the round of 16 tie and the Europa League holders are now proving to be the dark horse in the tournament.
