The World Cup Qualifying match between Uruguay and Chile will take place at Estadio Centenario on Saturday at 4:30 am IST.
Chile is heading to the Estadio Centenario to take on Uruguay in the opening round of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers on Friday night. Both countries have high expectations of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. In previous World Cup qualification campaigns between 2002 and 2014, Uruguay consistently finished in fifth place, forcing them into intercontinental playoffs, including a loss to Australia in 2006. However, their last two qualifying attempts have been much stronger, securing a second-place finish in 2018 and a third place finish for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Uruguay has maintained an unbeaten record in 2023, drawing with Japan and securing three consecutive victories against South Korea, Nicaragua, and Cuba. Marcelo Bielsa has taken over as manager and his primary goal is to restore Uruguay’s competitiveness, particularly after the unexpected group stage exit in Qatar. While Uruguay has a rich football history with two World Cup titles, their performance has been inconsistent over the years. On the other hand, Chile faces a significant challenge, as they have struggled in away matches, failing to win in their last eight games outside of their home country.
Chile’s recent qualification campaigns have got only four wins combined, a key factor in their previous failure to qualify. Their golden era in the mid-2010s, when they reached the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup and won back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016, seems like a distant memory. Despite finishing 2022 qualifying with just 19 points from 18 games and ending up in seventh place, Chile still earned a playoff spot. Berizzo has taken charge as manager, and although their form has improved in 2023, they started with losses to South Korea, Tunisia, Ghana, Morocco, and Poland, with only draws against Qatar and Slovakia.
Uruguay probable starting lineup: Rochet, Puma Rodriguez, Caceres, Vina, Olivera, Valverde, Ugarte, De La Cruz, Pellistri, Gomez, Nunez
Chile probable starting lineup: Arias, Delgado, Medel, Maripan, Suazo, Pulgar, Valdes, Aranguiz, Vidal, Sanchez, Brereton Diaz
