Tottenham Hotspur suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat in the Premier League to Aston Villa on Sunday. It was a game where Spurs did plenty of things right except putting the ball in the back of the net more than once. The home side created numerous opportunities in the eventful game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, offside, goalpost and an in-form goalkeeper Emi Martinez denied the home side from scoring more than one.

Credit to Aston Villa for holding their resolve and finding a way through to win the difficult clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. There were plenty of talking points to discuss from the action-packed game. However, one of the most notable one was the injury suffered by Rodrigo Bentancur. Following a challenge with Matty Cash, Bentancur was taken off after the half-hour mark. At the conclusion of the Premier League match, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said they are looking at an ankle issue and not knee.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury

“I was disappointed to lose him because he started the game so well, you can see his quality, and that’s a reason we got such a foothold in the game. With him coming back from a serious injury, you are concerned about it. From what I understand, it’s his ankle rather than his knee, but it’s not what we need right now, another injury, but that’s what we’re going through,” Postecoglou, quoted by the club’s website, said on the Review Show.

Reflecting on the 2-1 loss, Postecoglou felt that they deserved to get something out of the game. “The result is disappointing – disappointing for our fans and particularly for our players, because I thought the way we played, the intent they showed… we deserved to get something out of that game. On any other day, we would have won it comfortably. So, obviously, disappointed that they don’t get the rewards and our supporters miss that joy of winning a game of football,” the manager explained.

He added: “I was really pleased with some of the football we played. In patches, that was as good as we’ve played all season. Obviously, we didn’t get the kind of rewards our play deserved, and sometimes that happens in football, it’s fine margins. From what I’m looking for from the lads and the way we played, I just thought we went out there with a real intent to play the kind of football we want to play.”

Despite the loss, the Spurs manager can take plenty of positives from the performance. “It’s well chronicled we’re going through a tough patch in terms of absences from the team. It was Rodrigo, Gio and Bryan’s first starts and I thought all three handled themselves really well. From my perspective, as I said in the week, this is our opportunity to have a look at players and see how they fit into the football we want to play, and those three handled themselves really well. I’m not happy with the defeat, but as a manager, when you put a team out there, what you’re looking for is some real belief, intent and the team we want to be, and I saw loads of that today,” he explained.
