Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 3-2 in the Premier League fixture on Sunday at St. James’ Park. Callum Wilson gave an early lead to Newcastle in front of a vociferous home crowd and the new Saudi based owners in the stands. However, the visitors equalized through Tanguy Ndombele before Harry Kane gave them the lead. The game was halted for a while as a Newcastle supporter needed urgent medical attention and the teams returned to the field after a while. When the play resumed Son Heung-Min scored Spurs’ third in the first half injury time. Substitute Jonjo Shelvey received a sending off for two bookable offences before Eric Dier’s own goal gave a glimmer of hope to the hosts, but Spurs were able to see the game out.

It was Newcastle’s first game after the takeover by Saudi-led owners and the pre-match celebration inside the home ground was raucous. Fans waved black and white flags. Within two minutes of kick-off, Newcastle took the lead after some wonderful team work. Allan Saint-Maximin picked out Javier Manquillo down the right and the right-back’s cross was headed home by Wilson from close range.

However, the home side’s celebrations lasted only fifteen minutes as Tottenham leveled the score in the 17th minute. Sergio Reguilon squared the ball across the top of the area for Ndombele. The 24-year-old Frenchman had too much time and space to curl his shot into the corner.

Kane opens 2021-22 Premier League account

In the 22nd minute, Kane opened his Premier League account for the season. Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg played a brilliant overhead ball to pick the run of Kane and the English striker cleverly lifted the ball over the oncoming Karl Darlow and into the back of the net. Although the linesman initially flagged for offside, VAR intervened and the goal was given. Lucas Moura’s header from Son’s corner hit the post.

Meanwhile, play was soon brought to a halt after a medical emergency was spotted in the stands. Newcastle club doctor Paul Catterson and other medics were sent over for support and players returned to the dressing room for a while. Once the fan’s condition was stabilised, play resumed and seven minutes of additional time was given in the first half.

Tottenham grew in confidence as the game progressed and added their third. It was yet another superb team goal, as Moura released Kane down the right side of the penalty area with a brilliant through ball, and the Englishman squared the ball for Son, in front of goal. The South Korean fired home at the far post to take a two goal cushion.

The second half was a cagey affair as chances were very few and far between. Late in the game, Newcastle were reduced to 10-man as Shelvey, who was initially booked for a nick on Ndombele, took out Reguilon as he looked to drive into the box.

Meanwhile there was still time for some late drama, as Dier scored an own goal to give hope to the hosts. Dier slotted the ball into his own goal while trying to clear Jacob Murphy’s free-kick. Tottenham held on to the slender lead and secured their second consecutive win to move up to the fifth spot in the table with 15 points from 8 games. Meanwhile Steve Burce’s Newcastle remain winless this season, and are placed 19th with 3 points from 8 games.
