Spain cruised to victory in their Women’s World Cup opener as they dominated Costa Rica in Wellington. The Spanish Women’s team hammered 3 goals to begin their proceedings of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The dominant performance of the Spanish team saw them score three goals within a matter of 6 minutes. Valeria del Campo scored an own goal to put Spain ahead before Aitana Bonmati curled in a second two minutes later. Esther Gonzalez added a third after a header against the crossbar by Jennifer Hermoso, who then had a penalty saved by Daniela Solera.
Olga Carmona hit the bar on many occasions in the match. Costa Rica was saved many times during the match due to their goalkeeper Daniela Solera. Solera made a number of fine saves to restrict Spain to three goals. The Spanish attack was not that persistent throughout the match. However, the damage was done in the opening half only.
The Spanish team’s dominance was shown in the match stats, as they had 46 attempts at goal, including 12 on target. Costa Rica which is ranked 36th in the world only had one shot. However, that shot did not trouble Madrid’s goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez as it went wide. Spain also had 80% possession and 22 corners compared with just one from their opponents. The Spanish team look to advance past the last-16 stage for the first time. This is probably one of the most decisive starts for the Spanish team in Group C. Midfielder Alexia Putellas, who won the Ballon d’Or was among the Spain substitutes and played the last 13 minutes as she recovers from injury. Aitana Bonmati with 1 goal, 57 touches and 89% pass accuracy bagged the player of the match.
Costa Rica has never won a match at a Women’s World Cup. The best they have come so far is a 1-1 draw in their opener against Spain in 2015. However, this time the Spanish side did not give any breathing space to the Costa Rican team. The Le Roja will now look for another big win in their next match on 26 July as they face Zambia. The African nation is ranked at 77th place and is the lowest-ranked nation in the tournament. It should be a cakewalk for the Spanish side. Costa Rica on the other hand will be up against the Asian giants Japan.
Twitter seems to burst into jubilation as the Women’s team extended their domination over costa rica. Spain’s men’s team had shown similar domination over the Central American nation. Listed below are some of the popular Twitter reactions:
