Real Madrid squander chance to top La Liga table after 2-2 draw against Sevilla

Ivan Rakitic gave Sevilla the lead through a controversial penalty but Toni Kroos' shot deflected of Eden Hazard to level the score in the injury time

Real Madrid came from behind twice to deny Sevilla three points at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium on Sunday night. Fernando opened the scoring for Sevilla mid-way through the first half. Asensio equalized for the home side in the second half. Ivan Rakitic gave Julen Lopetegui’s side the lead through a controversial penalty. Toni Kroos’ shot deflected of Eden Hazard in the final minutes to deny Sevilla the three points. Real Madrid missed the chance to go to the top of the table. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona had played out a goalless draw on Saturday.

Midfielder Fernando Reges slotted the ball past Thibaut Coutois in the 22nd minute to give Sevilla 1-0 lead. Ivan Rakitic headed down a cross from the left side to the feet of Fernando. The midfielder calmly controlled the ball and beat Casemiro. He shot the ball between the legs of Odriozola into the Real net.

Zinedine Zidane’s side got the equalizer in the 67th minute through substitute Marco Asensio. The Spanish midfielder scored at the near post with a first time attempt after Toni Kroos laid the ball to him at the right side of penalty area.

Toni Kroos in fine form for Real Madrid

Former Barcelona man Ivan Rakitic gave Sevilla the lead in the 78th minute courtesy of a controversial penalty. Sevilla corner hit the arm of Real defender Eder Militao and referee pointed to the spot after the VAR check. On the other end of the field, Karim Benzema was brought down by Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou. VAR check denied the penalty to Real. Rakitic Stepped up and converted the spot kick.

Just when Sevilla seemed to have got the three points, Toni Kroos’ low drive took a deflection of Eden Hazard to make it 2-2.

Real Madrid are 2nd with 75 points from 35 games, level with Barcelona and two points behind Atletico Madrid. The defending champions could have taken a crucial lead in the title race as they have a better head to head record against both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. Sevilla are now six points adrift the league leaders. With just three games remaining, top three are separated by just two points.
