Jan Oblak is a Slovenian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Spanish club Atletico Madrid and captains the Slovenian National team. Oblak is a tall, athletic, and physically strong keeper. He has mainly known for his work rate, agility outstanding positioning, footwork, shot-stopping abilities, and composure in goal, as well as his overall consistency, leadership quality He is without a doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now. Now been named Slovenian Footballer of the Year on six occasions, in 2015, he won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy for the best goalkeeper conceding just 16 goals, a record, further winning another four times. Moreover, he has been nominated for the 2017 and 2018 Ballon d’Or awards for his consistent performances.
Born on 7 January 1993 in Škofja Loka, at age ten Oblak joined the youth ranks of Olimpija. At 16, he helped Olimpija Ljubljana gain promotion to the first division. The following season, Oblak was the team’s main shot-stopper as the club achieved the 4th place finish.
On 14 June 2010, Oblak signed a contract with Portuguese club Benfica who loaned him out for the first few seasons. Midway through the 2013–14 campaign, Benfica manager Jorge Jesus finally gave Oblak a chance, as he went on to keep several clean sheets in and took Benfica to the UEFA Europa League. He eventually won the league's Best Goalkeeper of the Year award on 6 July 2014.
On 16 July 2014, Atletico Madrid came calling, signing Oblak for €16 million making him the most expensive goalkeeper in La Liga history at the time. Until this day, Oblak remains the undisputed number 1 for the Madrid side becoming the Vice-captain. With Oblak in goal, Atletico Madrid has been the most efficient defensive side in Europe for some time now.
Oblak has won LaLiga, Copa Del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, Primeira Liga, Portuguese Cup and Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, all once.
Olimpija Ljubljana: On 17th May 2009, Oblak made his professional debut for Olimpija Ljubljana in the Slovenian Second League in a 7–2 win against Mura 05.
Slovenia: Oblak made his senior international debut for Slovenia on 11 September 2012 starting in a 2-1 away loss to Norway in the 2014 World Cup Qualifier.
