The World Cup Qualifying match between Paraguay and Peru will take place at Estadio Antonio Aranda on Friday at 4:00 am IST.
In the opening round of CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, Paraguay and Peru are set to face off at the Estadio Antonio Aranda on Thursday night. Despite both countries making appearances in World Cup finals during the 2010s, neither managed to qualify for the Qatar World Cup. Now, they are seeking significant improvement as they look ahead to the 2026 World Cup.
Since Guillermo Barros Schelotto took over as manager in October 2021, his performance in charge of the Paraguay national team has been somewhat underwhelming. His appointment came after a 4-0 defeat in Bolivia, replacing Eduardo Berizzo. In their final six World Cup qualifiers, Paraguay struggled to score, failing to find the net in five of those matches and only earning four points. Paraguay’s two international matches in September provide them with an excellent opportunity to start their campaign on the right foot. They will first host Peru and then travel to face Venezuela, currently considered the weakest side in South America.
As for Peru, they came very close to securing a spot in the Qatar World Cup. They secured a crucial win over Paraguay in their final group game, earning them a place in the intercontinental playoffs. However, they were defeated by Australia in a penalty shootout. After participating in the World Cup finals for the first time since 1982 in the 2018 tournament, Peru is determined to make up for their near miss this time around. Despite missing out on Qatar, Peru has been one of the top-performing South American teams over the last decade. Their impressive Copa America record suggests that they should have qualified for more than one World Cup in the last 12 years, with semi-final appearances in 2011 and 2015, reaching the finals in 2019, and securing a bronze medal in 2021.
