The UEFA Champions League match between Panathinaikos and Braga will take place at Olympiako Stadio Spyros Louis on Wednesday at 12:30 am IST.
Defending a narrow 2-1 advantage earned in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying playoff, Braga faces the challenging journey to Greece to encounter Panathinaikos in the return leg. Artur Jorge’s team was just moments away from carrying a two-goal lead to Athens, but a last-minute response from Panathinaikos has given the Greek giants a strong chance at redemption. Panathinaikos is far from being out of the running. A convincing 3-0 victory over Volos in the Greek Super League over the weekend served as excellent preparation for their upcoming clash.
Successfully overturning their deficit from the first leg would grant Panathinaikos entry into the Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2010-11 season. However, even if Jovanovic’s side falls short, a return to Europa League action after a seven-year absence would still be significant. In contrast, Braga has consistently appeared in the Europa League for the past four seasons. Yet, the prospect of a Champions League return is now within close reach.
While their upcoming opponents dealt with domestic matters over the weekend, Braga has been granted a break from Primeira Liga action to prepare for their demanding trip to Athens. Additionally, history seems to be on their side. The Archbishops’ only two appearances in the Champions League group stage have come through the qualifying route. They defeated Sevilla 5-3 over two legs at this stage in 2010 and secured a tense penalty shootout win over Udinese two years later. However, it’s best to not dwell on their group-stage records on both occasions.
Panathinaikos’s probable starting lineup: Brignoli, Vagiannidis, Jedvaj, Magnusson, Juankar, Vilhena, Perez, Verbic, Djuricic, Mancini, Loannidis
Braga’s probable starting lineup: Matheus, Gomez, Fonte, Niakate, Marin, A. Horta, Carvalho, R. Horta, Bruma, Djalo, Ruiz
