Nuno Mendes joins Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Nuno Mendes. The Portugal full-back arrives on loan, with an option to buy, from Sporting CP until 30 June 2022. Mendes, who hails from Sintra, near Lisbon, is a product of the Sporting CP youth academy with whom he signed his first professional contract in 2019. He made 47 appearances (1 goal, 3 assists) with the club and won the Portuguese championship and the League Cup in 2021.

Mendes has appeared for his country at every youth age category since U16. He earned his first senior cap versus Azerbaidjan, on 24 March 2021. The 19-year-old defender had appeared five times for the nation before being called up by Portugal coach Fernando Santos to take part in UEFA Euro 2020. Mendes will become the 13th Portuguese player to wear the Rouge et Bleu. He will follow in the footsteps of Joaquim Agostinho, João Alves, Fernando Cruz, Danilo Pereira, Gonçalo Guedes, Helder, Helder Marino, Hugo Leal, Humberto Coelho, Daniel Kenedy, Pedro Miguel Pauleta and Felipe Teixeira.

Pablo Sarabia loaned to Sporting CP

Paris Saint-Germain attacking midfielder Pablo Sarabia has joined Sporting CP on loan until 30 June 2022. A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Sarabia made his Liga debut for Getafe, in 2011. In five seasons, he made 145 appearances for Getafe (15 goals, 20 assists) before transferring to Sevilla FC, in the summer of 2016. With the Andalusian club, the attacking midfielder played 151 matches, scoring 43 goals and providing 39 assists.

In 2019, the Spaniard joined PSG with whom he played 79 matches, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists. He won one Ligue 1 championship, two Coupes de France, one Coupe de la Ligue and two Trophées des Champions in Rouge et Bleu.

A winner of Euro U19 (2011) and U21 Euro (2013) with Spain, the 29-year-old starred this summer for Spain in Euro 2020, with two goals and two assists in five games.

Sarabia was reportedly eager to join Atletico Madrid, which did not work out with the La Liga giants opting to sign Antoine Griezmann instead.

Antoine Griezmann rejoins Atletico Madrid

Griezmann has joined Atletico Madrid from FC Barcelona initially for a loan for a season with the option of a further season. The Madrid club will pay the player’s wages and there is a compulsory permanent transfer clause.

Griezmann came to Barçelona in the summer of 2019 from Atlético. As a Barca player, the Frenchman made 102 appearances, 74 in the league, 16 in the Champions League, 9 in the Copa del Rey and 3 in the Super Cup. Of those 102 matches, Griezmann started 89. The French footballer scored 35 goals and created 16 assists for the La Liga giants winning the Copa del Rey in his two seasons with Barca. The French international is only behind Thierry Henry with 49 goals on the all-time list of French goalscorers at FC Barcelona.

Griezmann is Atletico Madrid’s all-time fifth top scorer with 133 goals in 257 matches. He also provided 50 assists. Some of his memorable goals include the first-ever at the Wanda Metropolitano against Málaga, his two strikes against Olympique Marseille in the 2018 Europa League final, his hat-tricks against Athletic Club and Sevilla, and his four goals against Leganés on Feb. 28, 2018.
