Jude Bellingham arrives amongst loads of pressure, considering he is the second most expensive transfer ever in Real Madrid’s history. Taking into account the fact that he will become only the sixth Englishman to play for Madrid, puts a whole different spotlight on him. Prior to his presentation much of the curiosity revolved around what jersey number would Bellingham inherit. Would it be the 22 he used to wear at Borussia Dortmund? Or the vacant number 14 at Madrid? Or something else?

Jude Bellingham to take up number 5

To the surprise of many, Bellingham was presented with the number 5 at Real Madrid. This wasn’t expected since the Spanish defender, Jesus Vallejo already was the owner of number 5. Bellingham, however, wasted no time to thank Vallejo for his act to handover the number 5 to the midfielder. “I’m thankful to Vallejo, we talked and he didn’t mind. He is a great guy. I am very grateful.”, Bellingham added. By performing this act, Florentino Perez and Real Madrid have signified the trust and faith they have in the teenager.

Number 5 and Real Madrid have a long and illustrious history. Several key figures in the club’s history have worn the number, none so more legendary than Zinedine Zidane. Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Zidane wore the number 5 during his five year spell at Real Madrid from 2001-2006. Jude Bellingham has never been shy to express his admiration for Zidane and was even present with the former Madrid manager to watch the 2022 UEFA Champions League final together where Los Blancos emerged triumphant. Bellingham however, said he wants to build his own path and hopefully add to the legacy of the number 5. Other key Madrid players who have put on the number 5 are Raphael Varane, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Redondo among others.
