Paris Saint-Germain have announced that head coach Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new deal that will keep him in Paris until 2023. The Argentine took charge of PSG in January after Thomas Tuchel’s departure, who is now at Chelsea. Even though he failed to win a major title last season and surrendered the Ligue 1 title to Lille, the 49-year-old seems to have made a positive impact on everyone at the club.

The former PSG defender initially joined the French club on an 18-month deal but the club seems to be satisfied with his performance and has decided to give him a long run. PSG did win the Coupe de France title and reached the last four of the Champions League in the 2020-21 season.

The Argentine coach was previously linked with his former club Tottenham, who sacked him in November 2019. But he has now decided to extend his stay in Paris along with his coaching staff.

“I’m really very happy, for myself and also for my staff,” Pochettino told the PSG website.

“It’s very important for us to feel the confidence of the club and we will give our maximum so that the supporters are proud of Paris Saint-Germain. That’s why we will try and reach our objectives all together, as one.

“Twenty years ago I was captain of this club and today I am the coach… It’s a dream come true.”

PSG have been busier than most other European clubs this season, having already brought in players like Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Gini Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi.

Club president Nasser Al Khelifi is also happy with the contract extension of their former captain.

“We are happy that Mauricio is continuing his adventure at PSG,” Al Khelaifi said.

“He was the captain 20 years ago, [and] he shares the values, ambition and vision of the club for the future.”

PSG kick off their new campaign against Lille in the Trophee des Champions on August 1 and six days later they play Troyes in their Ligue 1 opener.
