Marcos Alonso opened the scoring for Chelsea in the weekend with a stunning free-kick against Crystal Palace. The Blues scored two more goals that day through Christian Pulisic and Trevoh Chalobah to start their 2021/22 Premier League campaign with a convincing 3-0 win. Chelsea will be regarded as a title favourite after their explosive end to the last season, culminating in them winning the Champions League. The Blues have strengthened the team in the summer, signing former Chelsea player Romelu Lukaku from lnter Milan. Alonso has stated that he cannot wait to start work with the renowned Belgian goal scorer.

Lukaku begins training with the Blues this week after a period of self-isolation. It will be interesting to see if the striker is available for the visit to Arsenal on Sunday. Alonso knows Lukaku’s strengths, having faced him in the Premier League prior to his move to Inter Milan. Lukaku had earlier played with Manchester United, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Anderlecht in past. He is returning to Stamford Bridge after enjoying a positive spell in Serie A with Inter over the last two years.

“I’m looking forward to playing with him,” the Spaniard was quoted as saying by the club’s website. “He’s going to be a great help for us. He’s a great player, it’s good to have him back [at Chelsea] and I’m looking forward to start training with him.”

Marcos Alonso on fans returning to Stamford Bridge

Marcos Alonso’s free-kick goal on Saturday became extra special because it was the first goal scored in front of a full house at Stamford Bridge for nearly 18 months. Alonso was delighted to have the fans back in the stadium.

“We all feel it. It’s a massive difference. We were all looking forward to it and it’s great to have the fans back. I was very happy for that goal. It’s been a tough pre-season as usual, so I’m very happy to start the season like that, I’m looking forward to the next one,” he added.

“We need to leave our Champions League victory for now and focus on the new season. There are a lot of things to play for. We need to go again like the end of last season, 100 per cent, and step by step we will get there.”

Meanwhile, new signing Romelu Lukaku also expressed his happiness over the way Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 3-0 on the weekend. “It was a good win and the manner in which we won with a dominant 3-0 scoreline and creating a lot of chances,” he was quoted by the club’s website.

“We also pressed and recovered the ball high. We didn’t really get into any problems so it was good. Hopefully we can keep that level of performance up. We’re going to have to because the Premier League is very difficult but I’m looking forward to this challenge.”
