David De Gea has opened up about the intensity of training under Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick. It’s almost a month since the German was appointed to the role but United have only played three games under him. It was largely due to the fact that recent clashes against Brentford and Brighton were postponed because of COVID-19 cases within the squad. Almost everyone is now back working at Carrington after the training ground was shut for four days last week. While giving a positive update, Rangnick revealed on Thursday that he had 25 outfield players at his disposal for Monday’s trip to St James’ Park.

With the Manchester United players preparing for the first festive fixture – against Newcastle United in the Premier League – De Gea is glad to see all his teammates fit. He is now looking forward to putting the interim manager’s ideas into practice on the pitch. “It’s great. It’s good to have the whole team back to train properly altogether and then of course see they are all safe,” De Gea told club media. They are back, they are all training, they are fine so it’s great to be together again.

“We’ve been training hard, of course. It’s very intense, every training session, every moment with him [Rangnick] is intense,” added the Spaniard. “You have to give 100 per cent every time in training and in the games. Let’s see. It’s just the beginning, it’s been a couple of weeks, so let’s see in the future. The team is training with energy, with pace, and now we have to show that in big games.”

De Gea on keeping more clean sheets

De Gea was named United’s Player of the Month at the end of a tough November. He will be in with a good chance for winning the December’s award too. The Spaniard has kept two clean sheets in three appearances during the month so far. Notably, he was the standout performer during the narrow 1-0 win at Norwich.

“Yeah, I think the most important thing for us is to keep clean sheets,” he added. “If we concede fewer goals, then we have top players up front who are going to score goals and win games.”

Ralf Rangnick provides squad update

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has provided an update on a positive development in the team news ahead of their upcoming away trip. Paul Pogba, who is still recovering from an injury picked up while on international duty with France in November, is the only Red still absent. “As you know, we had last week, the last training session on Thursday, on that day we had eight outfield players and three goalkeepers and then we closed down the training ground for four days in order to break the chain,” Ralf told reporters on Thursday at his pre-match press conference.

“Today was the third day of training this week, we started on Tuesday, we trained yesterday and today. Today we had 25 outfield players. Paul Pogba is the only one missing, everyone else was on board. The development in the last week was extremely positive.”
