It has been a tough start to the 2023-24 campaign for Manchester United on various fronts. The Red Devils have made a poor start to the season and have looked below-par in both domestic and European competitions. United have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and are on the brink of elimination from the Champions League. Their fortunes have been slightly better in the Premier League of late. Having said that, they have also had some alarming results and performances in the league.

One of the biggest reasons behind the team’s inconsistent campaign is injuries. Manchester United have been truly unlucky on that front, with several players out injured. This has prevented Erik ten Hag from naming his best XI on a regular basis. To make things worse, the Red Devils suffered a couple more injuries in their narrow win over Luton Town in the Premier League at the weekend.

The Danish duo Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund were substituted in that game owing to injuries and they have subsequently withdrawn from their national team squad. Man United have issued a statement explaining the details of the injuries. “Christian has a knee injury that is set to keep him out for around a month, while striker Rasmus suffered a muscle strain. It is hoped he will return before the end of November,” a club statement read.

Diogo Dalot pulls out of Portugal squad

With some important games set to come after the international break, ten Hag and his coaching staff would hope for the duo to return from the setback soon. Meanwhile, United full-back Diogo Dalot has also pulled out of the Portugal team for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. Dalot withdrew from the squad owing to personal reasons following talks with head coach Roberto Martinez. Young full-back Joao Mario from FC Porto has been called in as his replacement.

Erik ten Hag will wish for the rest of his squad to stay injury-free, as they set to tackle some difficult away games after the international break. “When we are back, we have three big away games [Everton, Galatasaray and Newcastle United] and we have to be ready for that. I think we are in a position that’s not too bad, even when we are not playing, since the start of the season, that well. Once we start playing well, and it will come, I think we’ll be in contention for the top four,” ten Hag, quoted on the club’s website, said after the win over Luton.

One of the biggest problem areas for the team has been scoring goals, as the strikers have found it difficult to find the back of the net. However, ten Hag is convinced that the goals will come. “We created good chances and that’s very good and, in the week, [Rasmus] Hojlund has already scored five goals in the Champions League. I am sure he can also do it in the Premier League. Marcus [Rashford] knows he will always score. Now, in the moment, he doesn’t score but it will come, as long as we create chances, it will come. I’m convinced about it,” he assured.
