Dominik Szoboszlai has undoubtedly been one of the signings of the summer transfer window. The Hungarian midfielder has settled into life at Anfield with relative ease. After moving from RB Leipzig in the recently shut window, Szoboszlai has seamlessly made the switch from Bundesliga to the Premier League. He has already established himself as an important part of the Liverpool setup by regularly helping the team on the attacking side of things.

He was once again at the top of his game on Wednesday in the come-from-behind Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City. During the 3-1 win, Dominik Szoboszlai was also on the scoresheet. After the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was understandably happy with his new signing. Speaking about his shooting, Klopp, quoted by the club’s website, said after the match, “I don’t have to tell him to shoot, he knows that, he knows better than I that he has a pretty good skill.”

He added: “The next one, which goes slightly over, is another grenade. You can see that in Premier League games, everyone tries to block him, that’s why he didn’t come through yet – but if he comes through there’s a good chance the ball could be in. A super goal. Wataru passed the ball through and in that moment, there is no midfielder there, there is no defender who can then hold him, that’s why it is so important we are winning the ball to try to play the first pass forward or at least have a forward-orientated idea. That helped there, a lot. Good.”

A very naturally confident boy: Jurgen Klopp

Klopp was also asked whether he expected Szoboszlai to have the kind of impact he is currently having at the club. “It’s so long ago that he’s here I forgot what I thought when he came in. Since the first minute of training, it was pretty impressive. He’s a top bloke, really top guy. Easy step into the team dressing room-wise and stuff like this. A very naturally confident boy and that helps and a super-hard worker and that’s what you see,” he stated.

“Today he came on and had two very difficult situations; he stepped on the first ball when he defended a counter-attack and lost the ball there. Then the next one I think he lost as well. From that moment on, he was just in the game. That is super-important. He enjoys it a lot being here and the people obviously appreciate it as well. It’s a good situation. Long may it continue.”

Klopp further went on to reveal when he informed Curtis Jones that he would captain the side. “Yesterday, when I told him he would be playing right-back, the same moment. I sold the right-back idea with the captaincy, let me say it like that. But he was already completely excited when I told him that he will play right-back. The way he executed it was super-special, I have to say. Wow. Super-smart. We thought about him. We couldn’t play Stefan long, we have to be careful with him,” the manager stated.

He added: “Joey will be OK for the weekend but was not OK for today. For Trent it is too early. So I needed to find solutions and Curtis was always in my mind as a potential solution there. He is really football smart, he enjoys being on the ball and the deeper you are the more often you can get the ball. It was a top performance, I have to say, for the first time in – for him – a strange position. He did really well and I liked that a lot. He is in a good moment, so he could probably play each position in the moment. But we will try to use him as often as possible in his natural position.”
