Liverpool news: What does Joel Matip make about the summer signings?

It is unusual for a team to sign four midfielders in the same window, however, it felt justified at Anfield, considering their lack of options in that department.

Liverpool were relatively busy in the recently concluded transfer window. Even though they have been active throughout the summer window, their main priority has been in midfield. It was for understandable reasons as well. Midfield was considered the team’s weak link last season when they failed to get a Champions League spot in the Premier League table. Add to it, some of their experienced midfielders like Jordan Henderson and Fabinho left the club in the summer.

That left a massive void in the middle of the park. However, credit to Liverpool for fixing them up by making shrewd signings. They got in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. It is unusual for a team to sign four midfielders in the same window, however, it felt justified at Anfield, considering their lack of options in that department. The summer arrivals have also settled in quickly to help the Reds make a brilliant start to the new season.

What does Joel Matip make about the summer signings?

Be it in the Premier League or Europa League, Liverpool have done incredibly well and are placed at the top end of the table. Senior club defender Joel Matip has nothing but words of praise for the new signings. “All of the new players have settled in well. Dom and Macca have played almost the whole time and they have done it brilliantly. You can see that both playing with the ball and also against the ball their adaptation has been great,” he told the matchday programme.

He added: “OK, they did that in their old clubs too, but they have never looked like they’re really new here. Wataru and Ryan came in later but have already shown that they can help us too. All the new players have done brilliantly so far and I am really looking forward to seeing them playing.”

Matip then went on to state that Liverpool are not playing the same football they initially played when Jurgen Klopp first stepped foot into the club. “This is my eighth season at Liverpool and I have always tried to be the best that I could be for the team. If I’m needed, I want to be there and I want to show my quality. The manager has tried to adapt our style during my time here. It’s not the same football we played six or seven years ago, so he’s adapting but he’s still trying to do it his way and I think this is working quite well,” he explained.

‘Focus is just on our next game’

Even though Matip is hoping to do well in all the competitions they are playing this season, his immediate priority is only on the next game. “We have four competitions ahead of us and we want to be as successful as possible in all of them. We want to go for everything but what it will be at the end, nobody knows. Our focus is just on our next game and working hard to do as well as possible in it,” he stated.

He added: “Points-wise, our start to the season is not too bad but performances-wise over the 90-plus minutes we’ve not been completely where we want to be. At the end we have often turned it around and it’s good to know that we still have the quality to do that. As a defender, though, I hope that we can keep some clean sheets and still win the games.”
