West Ham United have been extremely busy in the summer transfer window so far. The Hammers sold their key player Declan Rice for a record fee. However, the club has made sure that his departure did not leave any major hole in the squad by investing smartly in the window to make some exciting additions. The latest player to join them is Greece international Konstantinos Mavropanos from German club VfB Stuttgart.
Mavropanos joins the Premier League outfit on a five-year contract. At 6’4, the tall centre-back will undoubtedly add more strength to their already solid defensive unit. It is no secret that West Ham United were looking to sign a defender in this window and after a thorough search they have decided to sign the Athens-born player from Bundesliga side Stuttgart.
Manager David Moyes is understandably happy with Mavropanos’ arrival. “I’m pleased to welcome Konstantinos to West Ham United. We’ve been looking to add to our centre-half options this summer, so it’s good we’ve been able to bring in an international defender of his ability. We’re really looking forward to integrating him into the group,” Moyes was quoted as saying by the club’s website.
Meanwhile, Mavropanos, who already made his Premier League debut as an Arsenal player in 2018, is happy to return to the English top flight. “I am really happy and excited to be here – and to be back in the Premier League with West Ham United. It’s an exciting time to be joining the Club after last season’s Conference League win – and I am really looking forward to the next step in my career. I can promise the fans I will give everything for them and the shirt,” he explained.
The Greece international then spoke about his style of play on the pitch. “I can say I am a team player, so I try to help the team directly and I like to defend all the time, as I’m a defender! I tried to work well for the team, because the philosophy of the team is different in everything, so after all I try to give my best to defend the goal first of all and then if we can do something offensively that would be great. I’ve scored a couple of nice goals, I can say! But my main job is to defend the goal,” he elaborated.
The 25-year-old defender was in the stands during West Ham United’s thrilling win over Chelsea at the weekend. Speaking about his experience, he said, “The atmosphere was amazing, the fans were outstanding and the result was really good for the team. It was amazing to be there and I cannot wait to be on the pitch to live this. I was lucky enough to watch this game as my first game and it was a big win, so I’m looking forward to being on the pitch.”
