Manager Jose Mourinho reckons Tottenham Hotspur dropping points from winning positions in this season’s Premier League campaign might be down to ‘quality’. Unlike Mourinho’s earlier sides, the current Tottenham team has struggled to hold on to leads. Among the many examples, the infamous result was letting go of a 3-0 lead against West Ham United in the last ten minutes to end it 3-3. The same continued last weekend when they blew away a 1-0 lead against Manchester United, losing the game eventually 1-3.

Mourinho’s Spurs are seventh in the Premier League table and are six points behind fourth-placed West Ham. “I know why it happened,” Mourinho said ahead of Everton clash on Friday. “I know also that you can look at it from a different perspective. A team that starts matches well, starts winning matches, means something positive that you like to forget.”

With 20, Brighton have dropped more points than Spurs (18) from winning positions in the Premier League this campaign. “The positive aspect of that, but I agree with you in the sense that when you are in winning positions and lose points, there are also negative things to it,” he further added.

Jose Mourinho has gone on to admit that he may never be willing to discuss those issues at Tottenham. “That’s what I’m not ready to discuss with you. I think it has to do with some of our qualities as a team, but I’m not ready to discuss with you,” he added.

Crucial clash

Spurs next play Everton in the league. The Merseyside is just one point behind Tottenham but have a game in hand. Speaking about the match, Mourinho said, “A big nine days, and they’re going to end with a cup final, which for all of us is going to be an important moment.”

“We are not depending on the Goodison result to go with the best feeling to the final, but the final is still a little bit far. The Goodison match is very important. The distance between the teams is short, they have one match in hand. They have similar objectives. We need to focus totally on a very difficult match.”
