After getting off to a flying start at the Women’s World Cup 2023, Japan Women’s Team will be looking to add three more points to their total when they face Costa Rica’s Women in Dunedin on Wednesday. Coach Futoshi Ikeda will most likely not think about tinkering with the squad for their second group game. Japan got their first victory in the world cup against Zambia. The Nadeshiko as they are better known hammered the African nation (5-0). Now they will look to secure a last-16 berth. The Japanese team is poised to repeat the exploits from their 2011 campaign. The Nadeshiko have already won the title on one occasion. Japan is also the only Asian country to participate in all nine Women’s World Cup tournaments.
On the other hand, Costa Rica faces the possibility of a group stage exit if they lose against Japan. Amelia Valverde’s Las Tricas is ranked 36th in the world and qualified for the tournament by finishing third in last year’s CONCACAF Championship. However, they have struggled since then, with only two wins in their last 19 fixtures, suffering defeat in 14 of those matches. Additionally, in three of their last five matches, they failed to score. With another match ahead, the team is under pressure to perform well, knowing that another loss could lead to an early elimination. Las Tricas will look to brush aside the defeat against Spain and take on the Asian challenge.
