Indian Super League (ISL) side Mumbai City have brought in promising young defender Gurkirat Singh from Indian Arrows. The 18-year-old joined the Islanders on a three-year deal until May 2024 with an option to extend further. Gurkirat is a product of the famous Chandigarh football academy and has risen through the Indian national team’s age group teams. He is a versatile player who can play as a left-back and also as a left-winger. The 2020-21 Hero ISL shield winners have brought in some very exciting youngsters for the upcoming ISL season starting in November 2021.

Gurkirat has been touted as one of the most exciting talents to come out of the Indian football’s age-group set-up. He was part of the U-16 Indian team that reached the quarterfinals of AFC U 16 Championship in 2018 and was the joint top scorer at the 2019 SAFF U 18 Championships, where India lifted the trophy.

Gurkirat said: “Joining a club of Mumbai City’s stature is a dream come true for any youngster and it is no different for me. I am aware of the opportunity that has been presented to me but I know nothing is a given – I have a lot to learn from my peers and seniors and I am prepared to work hard to try and make a difference for this ambitious Club and for our fans.”

Islanders bolstering their squad ahead of 2021-22 ISL

The Islanders have been bolstering their squad ahead of the 2021-22 ISL season and have already brought some exciting Indian talents like midfielder Apuia and goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz. Apuia rose to limelight last year after playing a vital role in North East United’s run to the knock-out stages of 2020-21 ISL. The 20-year-old’s ability to dictate the pace of the game and control the midfield with ease earned him a national call up also.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Nawaz , who joined from FC Goa this summer has already made 47 appearances in the ISL. He is a very good shot-stopper and comfortable with the ball in his feet. Mumbai City boss Sergio Lobera’s footballing philosophy is based on ball possession and playing out from the back, therefore Nawaz’s ball-playing abilities could be handy for the Islanders.

The other big Indian name to join the champions is defender Rahul Bheke. The 30-year-old had joined from Bengaluru FC and is a versatile defender who can play as both centre-back and right-back. Bheke can also slot in at the left-back position.

Meanwhile, the biggest name to join the club so far has been Igor Angulo from FC Goa. The Spanish striker is an ISL Golden Boot winner. The 37-year-old has signed a one-year contract. He scored 14 times of 21 ISL appearances.
