It has been an extremely inconsistent season so far for the Red Devils. They have been below-par in both domestic and European games. United have already exited the Carabao Cup and their hopes of qualification from the Champions League group hangs by a thread. In such a difficult situation, United produced a professional display to get past Luton Town in the Premier League at the weekend.

It was not a pretty performance but Manchester United did just about enough to win the Premier League contest against Luton Town 1-0, thanks to a Victor Lindelof goal at the start of the second period. The strike came from a set play after Lindelof hit a loose ball into the top of the goal past. There were many things to be pleased about the result. First, the defender’s finish was brilliant to watch and then the team’s ability to make the most of a set-piece, something that has pleased Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire on set-plays

Maguire is happy to see the improvement in that department of Manchester United’s game. “We’ve won the game [against Luton] from probably a second phase of a set-play, so they’re important,” the defender said. “I think, this year, we’ve improved on them because, in my time at this club, we haven’t been good enough at attacking set-plays,” Maguire, quoted by the club’s website, said after the match.

Last season, United relied heavily on Marcus Rashford’s goals. However, this season there have been numerous goal scorers at the club. “I think, last season, we spoke about [the fact] that we needed to improve on that department. Obviously it’s nice for the attackers to score numerous amounts of goals, they did last season. Rashy [Marcus Rashford] got loads last year, and we probably should have chipped in a little bit more, us defenders, but it’s important,” he explained.

Manchester United are currently heading into the international break. Once they return, the club will have some important games to tackle. In the Champions League, they have to travel to Galatasaray but prior to that, a tough test awaits against Everton in the Premier League. “We can improve a lot more, for sure. We had a slow start to the season, but I think our form is slightly turning around. We’ve got a big game in the Champions League coming up at Galatasaray. But we’ve got to play like we did in Copenhagen and in the Premier League, the next game, Everton, another tough game, physical game, and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready,” he explained.
