Harry Kane has announced that he will stay at Tottenham Hotspur this summer after a move to Manchester City failed to materialise. The Englishman has three years left on his Spurs deal and had asked to leave the club this summer in search of silverware. However, the move didn’t happen and he seems to have softened his stance following a long summer of negotiations between City and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

In a post on Twitter, Kane said: “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks. I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100 per cent focused on helping the team achieve success.”

Kane’s announcement brings to an end, for now, a saga that began with the striker believing he had a verbal agreement with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, that he would be allowed to leave if a suitable bid was received.

The Tottenham and England captain was valued in excess of GBP 150 million by Spurs. Therefore there weren’t too many clubs around the world that could afford the transfer fee. The striker further had three years left on his GBP 200,000-a-week contract.

Kane attempted to force through a transfer by reporting back late for pre-season training with Spurs. The footballer later issued a statement clarifying he had never refused to train. Kane came off the bench in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wolves in the Premier League after returning late for the pre-season.

Meanwhile, Kane remains adamant he was always scheduled to come back later than his teammates after Euro 2020.

Manchester City were very much interested in the striker after the departure of Sergio Aguero at the end of last season, and made a GBP 100 million offer in June. However, they were unable to get close to an agreement with Spurs.

Nuno delighted

New Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is delighted and has hailed the 28-year-old’s decision to stay at the club.

“Great news,” said Spurs boss Nuno, after Kane’s statement on social media.

“Fantastic news for everybody. It is finished, Harry is going to be with us. It is good that this issue is over and we can proceed as normal. We are all very happy. One of the best players in the world. We are all delighted to have one more option for the season ahead of us. I spoke to him just like I speak to all the players and said, ‘let’s get ready to help the team’.”

Kane trained with the team ahead of the second leg of the European Conference league play-off  match against Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday. Nuno’s side trail by 1-0 after the first leg.

“He worked today and he is an option for tomorrow, let’s see,” said Nuno.

“Since Harry joined us, he has been working, so this is what we value. His attitude in training sessions has been great. It is up to us and everybody, the player himself, to get his motivation. There should not be any kind of doubts in terms of motivation to play for Spurs, an amazing club, good team. We are in a process and we need everybody involved.”

Kane is no doubt one of the best goal scorers in world football right now. He won the Premier League Golden Boot award last season with 23 goals to his name.

Therefore Manchester City might make one last move for the England talisman and if he stays at Spurs for one more season- which looks highly likely- it will be a huge boost to Tottenham’s attempts to qualify for the Champions League.
