The FIFA World Cup will take place in November and December rather than the traditional June and July dates in order to escape the severe summer heat in Qatar.
There is not long left until the start of the much-awaited FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and football fans all over the world are understandably unable to contain their excitement. The global showpiece is set to take place from 20th November to 18th December. When Qatar won the rights to stage the 2022 World Cup, it became the first country in the Middle East to be selected to host the tournament. Besides, it will be the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.
Football fanatics can brace themselves for month-long action-packed encounters, as the 32 best nations in the world will be going up against each other. The upcoming World Cup will be the 22nd edition since the first tournament in 1930. Brazil have won the competition more than anyone with five titles. But it has been 20 years since they last won a World Cup. Brazil’s last World Cup triumph came way back in 2002 against Germany in the final.
Since then, all the World Cups have been won by European countries. The defending champions are France, who defeated Croatia 4-2 in 2018 when the tournament was held in Russia. Notably, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place in November and December rather than the traditional June and July dates in order to escape the severe summer heat in Qatar. Thereby, this World Cup will be strangely held in the middle of the major domestic football leagues in Europe.

A total of 32 teams qualified for the FIFA World Cup which will take place in Qatar from 20th November to 18th December. There are a total of eight groups with each group having four teams. The top two countries from each group advance to the knockout stage. In the end, a total of 16 countries make their way to the last 16 of the competition. From this point on, the battle for survival becomes fierce, with all teams doing everything they can to avoid being knocked out.
Unlike the group fixtures, a knockout match cannot end in a draw – a winner needs to be found one way or another. If a match is tied at the end of regulation time, extra time of two 15-minute periods is played. Still, if there is nothing to separate them, it is followed by a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner. Then the eight winners will head to the quarterfinals before filtering down to the semifinals and finally, the two nations that survive the ordeal will get to fight for the coveted World Cup trophy. Besides, there will also be a third-place play-off for the losing semifinalists.
